This is more than true for this unassuming spot in northeast El Paso, named for the signature Korean barbecue dish. Lunch or dinner begins with banchan, “side dishes” of potatoes, broccoli, kimchee, daikon radish—too many to count—to accompany your meal. The kalbi is tender meat on the bone grilled to perfection; it needs nothing more than a side of white rice. The seafood pancake contrasts a crispy outside with tender fresh shrimp and octopus inside. This 24/7 restaurant resides in a highly competitive Koreatown strip mall. Sun Nong Dan features Hangul lettering on the walls and specializes in beef stews and soups.
The meat is marinated with soy sauce and sugar, then steamed and braised with mild Japanese peppers. The savory dish is served in a homey bowl, scissor-cut so the chunks are easier to eat, and dusted with sesame seeds. Eat the galbi with mixed rice, which incorporates wild grains and red bean. Even though Soban’s setting is fairly simple, Si Woo Yoo has managed to build destination status with Angelenos who crave refined Korean food and people feting out-of-towners. The chef-owner is a master at building sauces and braising proteins in those sauces, whether the main ingredients come from the sea or land.

Dwit Gol Mok (aka DGM) is a legendary Koreatown dive with a semi-hidden entrance, worn wood booths, and very few inches of wall that haven’t been tagged. Food was dry and tough, definitely overcooked the beef. I don’t mind spending good money on good food, but I felt a bit of buyers remorse after eating here. Overpriced for the quality in my opinion. Regular galbi in Korea is cut differently.
